To all the people that want to sue CCP for data loss. Wrong target. Sue the incompentent person that caused that data loss by "fixing" your PC.
For any competent repairman fixing a missing boot.ini is a 5 minute job and done without any loss of data on the disk.

Originally by: Behedwin Is there a way to find out if i need to do the "fix" steps and create a new boot.ini file?
My ini file is located at c:/ still. but it have /NoExecute=OptIn in the end of the document and ccp¦s file do not have that. the rest is exact.
Btw i have eve installed on F: and windows on C: does that change anything?
As my boot.ini file already excist i could not save a nother one at the same location. should i replace it and do all the steps ccp want me to do or am i fine?
thx
Because you have EVE installed on F: it tried to delete boot.ini on F:. So you're fine and don't have to do anything to fix this, because nothing got broken.

Originally by: Crisztian I'm sorry, but you have to be ******* ******** to blame anyone for this disaster other then ccp.Unfortunatly no everyone is a computer expert and may not know that you need to back up your file every 5 ******* minutes.
Well, when even "Sex and the city" has an episode dealing with backups and failed computers, you can kind of assume the knowledge has gone outside of just the computer expert area and into the general public.
When I was in school I just use to mail important stuff to my hotmail account, next to storing them on a USB stick. That way I had two places I could access the files from at school as well as instant backups. And given the number of hotmail accounts and sticks/mp3 players sold, you can hardly claim you have to be a computer expert to use them.

Criminal negligence.
Inadvertantly wiping a file from a computer constitutes criminal damage, does it? Thank you for that clarification.
I'll go look it up in UK case law now, I'm sure it'll be fairly easy to track down.
True, but the worst subsequent damage is the repair bill from the tech that restored your boot.ini and likely to be the only part CCP would be sentenced to to pay in european courts.
Data loss is caused by incompetent people trying to repair your/their pc.

Originally by: Kagura Nikon I tested it in 4 machines. Windows Service pack 2 do not NEED BOOT.INI. That is a FACT! Was introduced exactly because several viruses delete this file. It uses boot.ini only to extract extra boot parameters. The eve bug would delete the boot.ini but that would cause NO PROBLEMS DURING BOOT!
Now take one of those 4 machines, install XP on anything but the first partition, and any folder but the default \windows and then delete boot.ini and see if it starts.

Originally by: Friera 5. One of two mistakes then occurred (I don't know which as I haven't examined the code).
The error was in the installer. First it set the output to the correct folder, then it deleted "\boot.ini". A dot more or a backslash less and all would have been avoided.
Screenshots of the installer deleting "\boot.ini" and copy/pastes of people who extracted the installers instructions can be found earlier in this thread.
Very well written post. Reads like a "Seconds from disaster" episode from the National Geographic Channel.
